Tattoos, Torsos and Tans

Cool off

According to CNN Copenhagen is the best city destination where you can go swimming. The weather right now is perfect for taking a cooling dip in the harbour, or to go to one of the beaches. The official harbour pools with life guards are opening up today, June 1st. But who cares? You can practically swim anywhere you want in the harbour.

Tattoo

The oldest tattoo shop in the world is in Nyhavn. Dating back to 1884. The restaurant next door wants to close it, for a bigger kitchen.   Nyhavn was until the 1960´s known as the red Light District in Copenhagen, but now it has changed into being a Tourist trap. It is in Nyhavn 17, you can find it, hidden behind alle the chairs and tables from the restaurant. There is a support party on saturday for the tattoo shop. The former king Frederik lX got some of his tattoos here.

Concerts

Howard Gelb and Giant Sand is a legend from the 1980´s . Now he lives in Aarhus (Met a girl from there ;-)) and he is playing saturday in Lille Vega. So it is a change to see a really great musician in a not so big venue. There is also a small concert at Beat Records around the corner from Vega.

And now for something completly different. In Ungdomshuset there is a punk evening headlined by Guddommelig Galskab (Divine Madness) It is cheap and dirty and funny. Also June 1st.

Distortion is continuing at Refshaleøen, but now you have to pay an entry fee. So Nørrebro and Vesterbro is safe again. 🙂 .

And Folkets Hus in Stengade, Nørrebro is opening up again. That is today June 1st. all day and evening.

Pisstortion, Police, Pushers and Play It

Distortion
The neighboors hate it: The stink of piss and shit and old beer. They hate the broken glass puncturing the bikes. They hate the loud music that should end at 10 PM but the party keeps on going.
The kids from the suburbs love it. Here is a change to get really drunk, make a date, listen to some good music and dance in the streets. Wendesday on Nørrebro, Thursday on Vesterbro, before it moves out to Refshaleøen in the weekend, and becomes a party where you have to pay an entry fee, and cant bring your own alcohol.  Check it out
I probaply join the party one both Nørrebro and Vesterbro, but more like a observant, looking at the crazyness going on. And drinking a few beers of course. You can buy a bracelet to support the street party. The full deal for all five days (incl. Sunday) is 550 Kr.

The Street

At Christiania the situation on Pusher street is getting worse. On friday the local people opened up The Street again, after throwing out some of the younger dope dealers. But then the police announce that now they want to make visits everyday. And both saturday and monday morning they came with there trucks and chainsaws and removed all the stands. The result can be seen here at Nørrebro where I am living. The pushers at Nørrebro Parken have stepped up and placed guards around. So it can only go from bad to worse, with another gang war coming up. So over the summer we will have drive by shootings again, and more people filling the jails. And more people with PTSD.
It is sad that the danish government is so conservative and without visions.

Play It – Play it Sam

Stengade at Nørrebro has an open mic evening every month or now and then. You can bring your Guitar and check out your latest composition before a live audience. It is of course free, and you can sit and hang around. Its been a tradition since the 1990´s , and the staff works voluntarily. So a big hand for that.

Still summer in the city

This weekend we give you the best that Copenhagen has to offer. The weather is incredible warm, and it will become the sort of nights, that you dont want to end. With the sun rising at 4.40 you just as well stay awake.

Concerts

At Alice in Nørrebro, there is percusion for you when one of the most hyped bands in the UK is playing. Tomaga is on the poster on friday 25th and next day, saturday there is a record release with danish Addis Abeba who is doing the task of combining Ethiopian Jazz and Nigerian Afrobeat. I am more likely to head for Lygtens Kro with Finnish Hard Action. In the Meat packing District at KB 18 There is Metal in your ears with Swedish RAM and the next generation metal kings danish Slægt.

On sunday, 27th Nemoland at Christiania starts there new set of free concerts with local Danish bands. They have some real good names on the poster. I dont understand why they are hiring so big names, and make so much advertisment. There is only room for around 1000 people, and the audience will be crammed like fish in a barrel. 🙂 . And on sunday when Fastpoholmen and Wafande is playing and the sun is shining, I will rather find a nice place by the harbour and take a dip in the water.

Clever at Bloom

Bloom is in Søndermarken, Vesterbro near the Zoo, there is a nature and science festival. It is pretty long haired as we say, with talks and debates. Most is in danish, but there are also international speakers. And some music now and then. It is for free! , but you can buy a writsband and get access to more for a 100 kr. It is saturday and sunday May 26th and 27th.

Street party

And then on saturday there is a street party at Vesterbro on Enghave Plads . Things for kids, a flea market, music, food, beer, drinks. Mostly for locals, but it will be nice and the sun is shining, and int he evening you can find a bar to watch the CL Mens final, Liverpool playing Real Madrid.

Photo: Bell Rays at Loppen tuesday night. Good concert, even they were only playing for a small crowd

Sleep, swim and art

Hope you had a good long weekend. The coming days  also have something good for you.

Art week

Today, tuesday May 22nd, the Copenhagen Art Week is opening up. There are a lot of events, exibitions, performances, talks, films, debates and much more. Full program.
It opens up at The Charlottenborg, Royal Academy of art, at Nyhavn 6 pm. It is free, and you can have the change of catching a glass or two of Rosé wine, and have a a small canapee.

Sleep

Wendesday 23rd I will mayby go to Sleep at The Grey Hal Christiania. It is stoner rock, and good. I saw them some years back at Roskilde Festival, and I will go again. Afterparty at Loppen, with more stoner. And also at Loppen tuesday 22nd you can find the Bell Rays  . It is grovvy rock soul funk.

Swim

The water in the harbour is gettting warmer and warmer, and has now reached 18 degress. Officially you can only swim at the designated areas, but I have never heard about anybody being fined for swimming, where ever they wanted. So bring your towel and take a dip. Its nice.

Picture. I found the spider at a cafe by the habour. It is not open yet (The cafe), tell you more later.

Pentecost weekend

This is Pentecost weekend, so shops and schools are closed on monday. Another three day weeekend!!!

More food at Reffen
The new outdoor foodmarket opens up at the old shipyard at Refshaleøen (Say that again 😉 ) It is a bit out from the city center, so I think it will take some time before people really start flocking like at the old one at Paper Island.  But with concerts, events good eating and drinking I believe it will succeed. It opens here on friday may 18th .

Live music

Loppen is the oldest, and one of the best live music venues in Copenhagen. And now they are 45 years old, which is celebrated with a free concert. It is Folk, Hip Hop and old school rock on the program, and it is free entrance, so it will be packed. And even if you cant enter, there is a party outside.
And on saturday, here are a couple of one man bands at one my old favorite bars: Mærkbar at Vesterbrogade.

Prepare for next week, with design festival, and Distortion street party.

Picture: Gogol Bordello at Grey Hall, Christiania Last weekend. Fantastic concert 🙂

Summer and holidays

What a fantastic weekend we just had! And the next 3 days, it will even be better. So go out and enjoy the sun, until thursday when temperaturs drop, and the clouds come. I´ve been taking a dive in the harbour both saturday and sunday. The water is very refreshing (cold). Remember that thursday May 9th is a bank holiday, and schools, banks, public offices are likely to be closed on friday 11th as well. But shops are open.

Concerts

I can find many good things to recommend. At Loppen you should remember your earplugs when Polish Metal band Batushka take a look around. This is Tuesday May 8th
And at Alice, you can find psycidelic freejazz / progrock, when Greek – Australien Xylorius White playing Wendesday May 9th. And remember that the weekend starts at wendesday.

Kaj, on Christianshavn, is electronic music for free. But the weather is looking to be clouded and windy, so this is a mayby from my side.

Hockey

The Hockey Fans are mainly in the center of the city, around Strøget and Nyhavn. Nice and friendly beer drinking people. But if you wants a good time with the danes you should hang out at Dronning Louises Bro (Queen Louises Bridge, the gateway to Nørrebro). In the afternoon there are so many friendly people hanging out, drinking coffe or beer, or eating an Ice cream. Best place in town for just watching.

And there is the new food court, with outdoor seatings by the harbour, opposite the Inderhavns (inner harbour) Bridge. I havn´t tried it, but it is very popular.

Test at NYT

Test your knowledge about Copenhagen and Denmark here at New York Times . It is quite easy. 😉
And remember to enjoy yourself. 😀

May 4th

Wonder why there are so many candlelights in the windows on friday night? It is the evening of the liberation after 5 years of nazi occopation. In 1945 the people tore down the dark curtains and put lights in the windows, so that everybody could see that we were free again.  So on May 4th. this is celebrated.

Hockey Championships.

On friday May 4th starts the World Hockey Championships. Here in Copenhagen we have group A with Russia, Sweden, Czeck Republic, Slovakia, France, Belarus, Austria and Switzerland. So welcome to the Hockey fans, and everybody else. And take care out there.

Mary Jane

First saturday in May is international Marijuana march day. Off course it leaves from Christiania, and goes to the Parlament at Christiansborg, and back again. There will be a smoky afterparty at the Moonfisher Christiania.

Festival

Architecture Festival has started and continues until may 16th. There are movies, talks, debats, guidede tours and much more. And on sunday 6th the new Bloks architecture center opens with the Queen and ministers and a lot of other people. There is a debat about it. You can read this review in The Guardian.

Earplugs

In DIY Ungdomshuset, there is a Metal festival here in the weekend: Northern Discomfort. It is cheap entry price, cheap beer, and a lot of young people . It is a bit out of town, take bus 5C or 350S towards Nord West. European and US Metal Bands. Remember earplugs 😉 . Cash only. Ungdomshuset

If you are into dancing, mayby you shold look towards The Opera at Christiania at saturday, where there i Danish/ Ugandian Feridah Rose sings, and there is a after party as well. Cash Only.

Labour Day

Labour Day

In Copenhagen we say Happy red first May, and Green Beer. There is demonstrations from all over the city and they all end in Fælledparken. Here there will be Speeches, concerts, exibitions and a lot of beer drinking. The revolution is far away, but people are having a good time. So go to Fælledpark and drink some beer. The weather wil be cold and windy, but no rain. In the evening, there will be concerts around the city, specially in Nørrebro. Ungdomshuset and Kroteket
I will be found at the AFA party.

Food

After the Papirøen foodmarket closed in december 2017, there has been a long way to cheap food near the center. But now it comes. Just across the bridge from Nyhavn, you can find new street food stalls, selling relatively cheap food for Copenhagen prices. And there are also beer for sale, and of cours it is not the cheap Carlsberg beer. It is expencive crafted micro brewerie beer. But it tastes good.

African music

And what to do on a wendesday? Well you can go to Alice and listen to nice nice soft mellow Kora music, and dance a little around. The kora is played by Dawda Joabarteh, and with him there is a band af some of the best Jazz musicians in Copenhagen. Sounds really good. https://www.youtube.com

48 hours

Another 48 hours

In Nørrebro the coming weekend, there is the 48 hours Festival. It is mostly locals DIY and non profit. There will be concerts, art exibitions, theater perfomances and much more. If you SoMe search #48timer all the events pop right up in your face.

Sakura

And in the weekend you can also find the japanes celebration of the blooming cherry trees. April 28th and 29th you can find it at Langelinie. There will be performences on differet martial arts, Japanes food, people dressed up as Pokemons, and much other stuf. Unfortunately the weather looks a bit cold and grey. sakurafestival.dk

Dancing

Move your feet and dance away at alicecph.com where there is Brazilian Afrobeat. It sounds like something that could turn out just fine, and with sweat pouring out, and a lot of beautiful people around. They also have a night disco, but it is not a big attraction.

I have an obcession with paint Spills, so here is a giant from Nørrebrogade 😉

Drunken Cherrie Fuzz

Fuzz

At Stengade, their are rare visitors when Fuzz legends 1000mods from Greece and Fuzz Orchestra from Italy are playing. It is on monday (today), and they are joined by the danish band Hjortene. So good music to you on a monday. https://www.facebook.com/events/430856504012443/

Drunken teens

Remember that friday April 27th is a national holiday. So many shops are closed. This is the big Confirmation day, so the churches are filed with young kids and there families.

In Denmark there is no legal drinking age – and confirmation is in many families seen as the time when you can start to drink alcohol. So that is around 14 years old. So be warned of drunken teenagers.

Cherries
There are two places where people flock to see the cheerie trees blooming. One is on Langelinie, by the Little Mermaid, and the second is by the Bispebjerg Cemetery about 5 km´s nord – west of the city center. If you go to Bispebjerg you should also visit the fantastic Grundtvigs Church, built in the 1920´s and 30´s, it is an example of Scandinavien design and simplicity.
