Happy Xmas (War is over)

The John Lennon / Yoko Ono christmas song is iconic. But war is not over, even if you want it.  The war goes on all platforms, and you are in the center of it. The war for your time, the war for your money, the war for your freedom, The war for your _____________________ (please fill in).
So keep on fighting, to the be the one you want to be.

Tuesday
Bauhaus is an iconic band from the 1980´s with post punk scene. I never really considered them Goth, but they have received a lot of attention from the Goth community. Peter Murphy, the lead singer and composer, are performing the classic Bauhaus songs at Vega. I saw the same show about 5 years back, and its really good. And suits the depressing weather.

For those who are searching for a bit of heavy on a tuesday, the road will lead you to Amager Bio and Lucifer. They are from the forests of Sweden. Supported by Local Skinny Violet, who have left the garage,to play some rock.

Wendesday
The Blue Van at Hotel Cecil. Its really good positive pop rock, which you might need in these hard times.

Babylove & the Van Dangos are a local band: Jazzy, soul and Funk, at one of the many small Jazz bars in the center of town. Charlie Scotts have room for 150 people.

Thursday
The Christiania Jazzclub and Børneteatret have many differet shows. Today theres a English spoken Hip Hop arrangement, with Jethro Alonestar Sheeran and the guy who is always everywhere: Al Agami. They call it Hip Hop, but i will bet my old cap, that it will be more like Rap with jazzy notes.

Friday
The oldest NYC Ska band are still going strong, and are on a worldtour. The Toasters are visiting Loppen, and I would be there, if it wasn´t  for the julefrokost I am attending.  Polish you Dr. Martens and get going.

Another really good way to spend your friday is at Pumpehuset. Career Suicide, The war goes on and Night Fever are some of the best Punk/Metal bands. This must be the best concert of the week. Its loud and fast.

For the Brazillian lovers, head for Operaen, Christinia, and Trypical Cumbia. Its a Big Band, who are performing, to make your feed move. You cant stand still. Theres a support band as well. It will be sold out, so come early, and bring cash, for the entrance and the bar.

Saturday
This years Xmas show at Alicecph: The Kutimangoes are playing Hot Hot Hot Afrobeat. Enjoy and dance.  They are the best Afrobeat act in town right now.

I first saw Danko Jones many years back in Stengade. Now he has made it big, with many tours, and last time he was at Roskilde Festival 2017. Pure Rock´n Roll at Pumpehuset

To warm up your heart in this cold weather go for Seven Inch Orange at Operaen. They are playing good old soul music, from the 1960´s and 70´s No doubt where the inspirations are coming from, and its really good, with a lot of horns.

Sunday
Enter Shikari is a British fast Rock band, thou describe themselves as being Hardcore. But they are fast and are going over the hills like a rocket. Its also at Pumpehuset.

And the Chritsmas market in the Grey Hall, Christiania are still on for the coming week. There are local bands playing and its really hygge. When I think about Xmas Hygge – I think about the Grey Hall Julemarked.

Another christmas tradition is the Santa Lucia parade with kayaks in the harbour channels. Its on thursday december 13th and the kayaks are all lighted up. Its really beautifull. Sails of from the Kajak hotel at Kalvebod Bølge 4.30 PM.

Buy a Bloody Mary at the bar and go to the Christmasblood in Ungeren with Muay Thai. Its really exiting, and the audience goes wild. Best view is from the balcony. Doors open at 5 PM, and first match 6. Bring your cash.

BO IS BACK

Sorry, for not posting anything the last two weeks. But I was down with a serious batch of man-flu. Now Im back at the blog, sitting at the screen, with my fingers dancing at the keyboard. Meanwhile we have gone into december, the christmas month, with all the partys, christmas beer, gifts, Christmas markets, and ending it all with the biggest one night party of the year: New year.

Tuesday
The Nightmare before christmas,   The Tim Buton movie, is perfect for sing-a-long, so head for Cinemateket, where they are showing the movie. And you dont have to sit quietly in your seat. Jump up, and sing a long with the rest of the audience. Only for nerds. 😉

Wendesday
Viagra Boys  from Sweden are one of the best band names I know of. I saw them from the moshpit this summer at Roskilde Festival, and now they are back, playing at Lille Vega . Its post punk and rock´n roll right in your chest.

Thursday
Do you remember Rodriques who just came out of nowhere, with an album from the end of the 1960´s and just blew everybody away? Its the same story with the UK Singersongwriter Washti Bunyan  who is playing in a concert arranged by Alicecph, but taking place Nørrebro Teater in Ravnsborggade.

Cockpit Music is a legenday Copenhagen band dating back to the 1980´s. Jazz, Post Punk, World and Avantgarde finds its way out of the Guitar, drums and sax of the three guys. They are performing one of their rare concerts at Jazzcup in Gothersgade. Its early, starts at 4 PM.

Friday
Brazilian Cumbria at Alice Copenhagen. Its local bands and DJ´s, for this christmas show.  Grease your hips and dance your trouble away.

For some good old psych go for the hippie place at Operaen Christiania,  where The Sonic Dawn are playing, and then Beat meremaids are Dj´ing with there amazing collection of 1960´s psych . Cash Only

Underwerket in Valby have visitors from Italy in Storm{o} who are playing hard core punk. They are supported by two Copenhagen Bands: Hypocrite and Flayed .

Its not many Cathedrals, that opens up for concerts in the evening. But in Vor Frue Kirke in Nørregade, its God Goes Deep,  with DJ Mashti, and a lot of guest. The church room gets illuminated, and you can sit there and meditate over the Chill out ambient sounds. Its world Class and of course its free.

Saturday
More brazillian at Alicecph when DJ Mam, from Rio are dropping by. For many years one of the best DJ´sin Rio, he has now joined with local Copenhagener Pharfar one a new album. So this is a release album Concert.

Nikoline is the new superpower Feminist rapper on the danish scene. With ”Sut min klit” she is brilliant in getting her message out. I bet she will be doing the summer festivals around the country, so go to Loppen and see her before everybody else.

One of this weeks best ROCK concerts are Deville at Stengade – Nørrebro They play loud and with good guitars. Bringing two supprt bands with them.

In Ungeren Nordvest There is a punk rock party, with Ond Tro (DK) & Svart Magi (Sweden). They are both some of the very good new wave in Scandinavia, and playing at one of there favorite venues, this is turning out to be a very good concert. And then theres a lot of DJ´s. Cash only.

Turquise Sun are from Aarhus and are playing surf / psych, and they also have vocal hamonies. In Underwerket  you can also hear Fyr, who is Oscar from Orcas, with a guitar, and Bünni is warming up with some Lo-fi experimental.

Jul på Vesterbro is a legendary Christmas TV comedy by Anders Mathesen. The closes you are coming to the real thing is Märkbars Christmas paper cuts. There will be bands playing and you can drink the DødsGløgg  (Death gløgg) . You will be talking slurred and feeling it is not possible to walk straight. But funny as hell. 😀

Sunday
No real good live music, but then go to AFUK on Enghavevej and see the Freak XMAS show, with a lot of international performers. Very talented body artists, so it will be a great show, for you.

Monday
Two reasons for going out, on this monday.  Go to Vega, and listen to 1990´s Brit rock Ash (from Northern Island) who are still going strong.  They are supported by Indoor pets also from the UK

Supersuckers with Eddie Spaghetti in front are one of the best Garage rock bands, you can find on the the planet right now. They are playing at Hotel Cecil.
And suddenly your monday is not so boring after all.

There are to kinds of people: Those who sell, and makes money, and those who buys and uses money. So you can find Christmas Markets all over town, that will gladly take your money and covert it to some crap. Some of the best crap is to be found at Christiania Julemarked. It opens up saturday december 8th, and goes on for the next two weeks. Choose a normal weekday in the afternoon, and NOT  in the weekend.

Summer is almost gone

Did you have a good weekend? With pride and the 400th birthday of Christianshavn? Well now it is back to everyday life, summer is almost over, schools have started, everybody are working again.

Put the party keeps on going!!

For example at Underwerket where Crywank is playing punkrock supported by two local bands. Its at tuesday 21st in Valby.

Even thou the pride is over, there are still related events in LGBTQ fora, with free films in Ravnsborggade with Mix Copenhagen.

Stengade:
Is also opening up after summer holidays, with a great evening for dancing when ”The night flight Orchestra” (like if Meat Loaf and Toto had a love child) are playing at friday 24th. There from the homeland of Abba: Sweden

Two festivals:
And there are two festivals in the weekend. The first is Kultur havn – ”Culture harbour”, is a lot of arrangements from local sport, art, culture, dancing and guided architecture tours in Nordhavn. Part of it is the Cliff Diving Contest from the Opera House (27 meters). You can watch it from the Ofelia Square. Its sponsered by a energy drink company. And yet another sport is the Swim around Christiansborg – The Parlament. Also on the 25th

The second festival is Uhørt – ”unheard off” with new and upcoming bands that are given a chance for a larger audience. It is in the halls at Vesterbro / sydvest, so close to the city.

Flea markeds

Two special flee markets: Bike Flea market at Bolchefabrikken / Buddha bikes.
Music instrument flea markets by 4sound  at Aabenraa just by Kongens Have and the Roundtower.
And there are a couple af street partys at Vesterbro for you: This time it is Skydebanegade that are making a 30 years celebration af the renewal of the street.
Not so far away at Carlsberg Byen there´s another street party.

In the summer time.

So anothe great week lies ahead of you. It is just to pick and put on your table.

Cinema

At Huset they are shoving free outdoor films. It is old school cult films like Hair (Milos Foreman), Braindead (Peter Jackson) and Beneath The Valley of the Ultra Vixens (Russ Meyer): they show it in the court yard, which is quit small, so come in good time. 🙂

Dance

Dancing in the summer is so nice, and now you can see the Dancers at Ofelia Square at the harbour. They open the doors one hour before, and there are 150 free seats. It runs for 3 days – August 9-11th, and the setting is absolut marvelous with the Copenhagen harbour as background. Starts at 3 and 7 PM

Food

Street food, has been the new thing in Copenhagen the last years, and in the weekend you can join the Street Food Festival at Nørrebro by the lakes. So a lot of small tasties, and you wont leave hungry.

Live music

At Pumpehuset City Garden there are still free concerts om wendesdays. Check it out on the August 8th, with some indie band:

For the second time the Haven Festival  are opening there doors to the audience. With names like Arcade Fire, Kraftwerk, Einsturzende Neubauten, Den Sorte Skole, there is something for everybody. The only little But: The prices for beer and food are to high, and mainly for the wealthy hipster segment. It is at Refshaleøen.

For the latin lovers there is Trypical Cumbria for you at Operaen Christiania . It is friday evening and night, and it is cash only.

And at Lygtens Kro in Outer Nørrebro there is Balkan Bouzouki (not bazooka!! 😉 ) Music with Kalles Casino. It is free entance and alsom on friday.

Saturday in Nordhavn, there are not so many parties, but the El Paso Summerparty sounds like really fun with a Mexican / Texican them, so a lot of Tequila, moonshine, hot food and “Fiesta like there is no Mañana.”

In the summer time

The summer keps on being absolutely fantastic. The weather is so warm, the water in the harbour is nice to swim in, so right now you get the best that Copenhagen can offer.

Carpark Festival July 27-28th is placed at the parking lot under the Aabuen highway on the border between Frederiksberg and Nørrebro. They present upcoming bands from Copenhagen and surroundings, so you can find something that suites your music taste. It is free, and there are bars and food trucks.

And there are more upcoming bands in Huset, where the ”Summer in the City” festival is taking place. Its free entry and right in the center of the Copenhagen, so it should be easy to find.

Feel like dancing?

Blågårds plads in Nørrebro is hosting a big dance event by Metropolis. It will be quite spectacular when the 100 dancing Copenhagers perform the space specific choreography by Joanne Leighton. There are two performences at 4 and 7 o´clock PM. It sounds lie a unic experience. Read More

Son of Bob

He will never get rid of the legacy of his father: Reggae legend Ziggy Marley is on tour and he is presented in Vega on July 25th. Ziggy is both doing some of his own stuff, but it shold be possible to hear some of Bob Marley classics as well.

Remember Aqua? Barbie Girl? They are headlining concerts sponsored by Tuborg Breweries, together with Lukas Graham, Danish Rock legends DAD and a bunch of other bands. The concert is in Valby Parken on sunday 29th and starts at 1 PM. It might be a good idea to buy your ticket in advance.

Eclipse

Take a good look at the moon. On friday around 9.30 PM it turns all red, when there is a lunar eclipse during full moon. Its easy to see from the ground, and since its just after the rise of the moon in the east, it is best seen from the Amager Beach. You can bike out there, or take the Metro. And the weather should be bright and clear.

Midsummer, burning the witch, slutwalk and #metoo

It is a tradition since mediavel times, to make a big bonfire on June 23rd Saint Johns (Sankt Hans) evening. It is all over the country and also in Copenhagen. It has for many years been controversial to burn witches (or the symbol of witches) and even more in these #metoo times.
This year the fires are cancelled because of the long drought. So even it has been raining the last week, The Fire Brigade is still making a ban. Instead there are all sort of creative things, like LED lights and other fake fires.
Along the harbour there are many events, so its easy to take a bike ride and find some.

At Reffen in Refshaleøen, they are celebrating Sankt Hans, and Fastpoholmen are playing, and they are a really good Swedish / Danish band.

Slutwalk
is an event to mark that a woman should be free to dress and act, in any way she likes, without being harashed and assulted by men (or other women). You can participate at Rådhuspladsen at 12 midday, and the next couple of hours. (No dress Code ;-))

Saturday is time for Nørrebro Festival at Blågårds Plads. There is the Nørrebro Løb, where kids and grown ups are running around in Nørrebro, and a Flea Market, and bands playing, Barbecue, Circus, entertainment for the kids and other stuff. It all ends in the evening with the fire without fire or witch. Because Nørrebro is NOT celebrating the burning of witches.

And if you are not that much into outdoor fake bonfires and then go inside to Ungdomshuset an find some Hard core Punk

Natasja on friday
Now ten years have passed since danish reggae legend Natasja died in a traffic accident in Jamaica. She is celebrated in a concert at Pumpehuset friday, with the best reggae artists that Copenhagen can find. It should have been at Grey Hall Christianina, but is moved to a smaller location. Tickets at the door.

Friday Night Skate is starting at Solbjerg Plads 8 PM. So grap your rollers and get moving.

Beyonce and Copenhell
Many of my friends  are headbanging at Copenhell. You can find a spot to hear it from the stages. Or climpe the fences… It is more difficult to climp the fences at Parken . Beyonce and Jay-z are playing, but you can hear it from the park next door.

Nemoland Christiania has free concerts every sunday. You can hear really good rock June 24th  when Sandmen from the 1980´s are playing with my favorite  Rock band Bolværket as support. It should have been the other way round. Sandmen supporting Bolværket.

On your way to Christiania you can drop by the Fleamarket in Islands Brygge. Always something good to find, and the opportunity to take a swim in the harbour.
Have a fantastic weekend

Reffen

The new food market at Reffen opened up in the weekend. I was there at Saturday, and I am surprised to see the amount of people there. It was a bit late, and more than half of the diners was sold out. Thats good going for a first weekend.

The food I got was not worth the price of 80 kr. It was a vegan asian noodle, and shouldn´t cost more than 30 kr. on Nørrebro, Vesterbro or Christiania. And the beer was 55 Kr., for an okay but not very good IPA. Too Much. My friends had some italian Spaghetti with meat sauce, and that was expensive as well. A Corn roll roasted with Creame cheese is 70 Kr.!
I dont know if the rents are too high, or the food sellers are to greedy, but it is too much money for that quality of food and drinks. You have to eat it outside on a bench at a dirty tabel, and for these prices you need better facilities.

I have to try out some more places, and see if they have better food for the price. It got cold, and we left again, but so far I am not impressed. The setting is nice with the sundown over the harbour, and the old industrial shipyard. Check it out yourself and send me your recommendations.
But going back I met David, who will soon be opening up a small bar out on one of the docks. I will tell you more about it later.
