Will the summer ever end?

Now the sun is beginning to go down at 9 PM, and with the beautifull weather it is perfect for outdoor film watching. The season starts with The Cinematek shoving films at Kongens Have. Tuesday its an old Wim Wenders Classic: Buena Vista Social Club.  and in the coming weeks there will be more free outdoor cinema. I tell you about it later 😉

Sunday concert at Nemoland – Christiania is electronic rapper Lucy Love, check her videos: and Rapper from Aarhus Marwan, it is off course free of charge, and mayby I meet you there. But besides that here are very few concerts in this week.

If you are looking for some slow moving ambient Chill out, head for Frederiksberg Have (Gardens) and the Stella Polaris Festival. They say it is one of the biggest Chilling festivals in the world, and it takes place every year. And with this lovely summer, it seems like a very good place to spend your saturday.

Dancing

Metropolis is presenting free dance performances around the city. It is both in late evening and early mornings. Led by Joanne Leighton, who is a choreografher / dancer, and the international dance company WLDN. Check it out.

I am not a big fan of Opera. In fact I have never seen one for real in a theater. But there is a Opera festival going on – with free concerts at The food market at Israels Plads.

Going fast

Motorsport is not a really big thing in Copenhagen but in the weekend there is a race with old historic cars like Aston Martin, Porsche and Lotus. It takes place in Nordvest, but they call it Bellahøj, because it sounds finer.

Wake Boarding is like water skiing on a board. But here it is after a cable car dragging you through the water. There is danish championships, so a lot of tricks on display there. Copenhagen Cablepark in Amager is the host to this event.

Fleas

After a break in July the flea market season starts up again, this time with two good ones. Saturday at Enghave Plads Vesterbro, and Sunday at Stefansgade Nørrebro you can catch a good thing. “A Flea market a day, keeps the bad times away”.

In the summer time

The summer keps on being absolutely fantastic. The weather is so warm, the water in the harbour is nice to swim in, so right now you get the best that Copenhagen can offer.

Carpark Festival July 27-28th is placed at the parking lot under the Aabuen highway on the border between Frederiksberg and Nørrebro. They present upcoming bands from Copenhagen and surroundings, so you can find something that suites your music taste. It is free, and there are bars and food trucks.

And there are more upcoming bands in Huset, where the ”Summer in the City” festival is taking place. Its free entry and right in the center of the Copenhagen, so it should be easy to find.

Feel like dancing?

Blågårds plads in Nørrebro is hosting a big dance event by Metropolis. It will be quite spectacular when the 100 dancing Copenhagers perform the space specific choreography by Joanne Leighton. There are two performences at 4 and 7 o´clock PM. It sounds lie a unic experience. Read More

Son of Bob

He will never get rid of the legacy of his father: Reggae legend Ziggy Marley is on tour and he is presented in Vega on July 25th. Ziggy is both doing some of his own stuff, but it shold be possible to hear some of Bob Marley classics as well.

Remember Aqua? Barbie Girl? They are headlining concerts sponsored by Tuborg Breweries, together with Lukas Graham, Danish Rock legends DAD and a bunch of other bands. The concert is in Valby Parken on sunday 29th and starts at 1 PM. It might be a good idea to buy your ticket in advance.

Eclipse

Take a good look at the moon. On friday around 9.30 PM it turns all red, when there is a lunar eclipse during full moon. Its easy to see from the ground, and since its just after the rise of the moon in the east, it is best seen from the Amager Beach. You can bike out there, or take the Metro. And the weather should be bright and clear.

Life is more than Jazz

I am back from four days at Roskilde Festival, with some fantastic people, music, moments and atmosphere. And after sleeping two days, also back at the desk.
The Jazz festival is rolling with full steam. It is easy to find the good cheap concerts. You just click at free concerts and the date, and you can find them. At Balders Plads  in Outer Nørrebro they have a very good program, with a lot of local musicians.
Also at Kongens Have in Central Copenhagen have free concerts with good bands. For late night you can head to Christiania Jazzklub at Børneteatret. It isn´t free but its cheap and with a little smoke in your lungs you can find really nice concerts.

Art

Not everything is jazz. CC – short for Copenhagen Contemporary – has opened in new rooms at Refshaleøen. It is 7000 m2 big and the opening show is the Superflex Group doing there London Tate show from last year. I haven´t check it yet, but that will come soon.

Street Partys

On friday 13th  Rust  makes a street party outside of there venue in Guldbergsgade. They Cooperate with the independant Hip Hop Label Affiliated, so you can drop by and listen to some of the sweetest Hip Hop That Copenhagen can produce right now. Starts at 4 pm and officially ends at 10, but no surprice if the party continues into the long summer night.

You can cotinue straigtht to another Street party in Nørrebro, with Bas Under Buen. Reggae, dancehall, dubstep, UK garage, dub, steppas, drum & bass, UK bass, trap. Everything with a heavy bas. Thats Saturday July 14th, with by the way is my birthday.

Underwerket

If you are tired of all the sun and positiveness and are feeling more dark and glommy go to Underwerket at Saturday 14 th. Legendary hardcore punk band MDC – Millions of Dead Cops – are playing with German Scheisse Minelli. It is a very small room, so remember your ear Plugs. But very cheap beer.
At Ungdomshuset you can also find cheap beer end Hardcore punk with Swedish band Lonely Grave.

Move your body!!!

The Move festival is all about moving your body. There is dancing, yoga, slackline, parkour, lectures and much more. The Festival takes place at Refshaleøen, and I think that you are free to join all the classes. Next year i might do some Tai Chi or Chi kung classes. 😉

I take a holiday
Next week I am taking a holiday, so no updates from me. But Loppen at Christiania have their own outdoor Loppen Festival, with local bands. It is right outside the venue at Christiania from Friday 20th to Sunday 22nd July, and its free, but please support and buy your beer and sodas there.

Summer in the city

This week the weather is absolutely amazing…

Summerdance in Fælledparken.
The next five weeks you can go dancing for free. It is every monday – thursday in the whole month of July. So grab your dance shoes and find a partner. If you dont already have a dancing partner, you can find one here. And the best place to find a lover is on the dancefloor. Because if you can dance together – you can make love together. ❤
Check it out

Friday night skating
Find your skates and and join the pack. It starts at Solbjerg plads, Frederiksberg and there is both room for Side By Side and Inliners.

Jazz is not dead…
The start of the week is quite dead when it comes to concerts. But this is just calmness before the storm. Because now the Jazz Festival is coming with an amazing program. In the ten days the festival goes on, there will be more han 1000 concerts in more than 100 venues. And a lot of it is for free, so you can sit outside and chill with a six pack.
I dont want to come with specific recommendations. Also a lot of the concerts are not in the official program. But dont miss the opening concerts at Kongens Have, Presenting Pierre Dørge and the New Jungle Orchestra. Some of the best jazz in Denmark.

Meanwhile You can find me in the Dust hell at Roskilde Festival. It is the best program for the last decade, and I am going for 4 days. Roskilde is the biggest cultural event in Scandinavia. Eminem, Bruno Mars, Gorillaz, Nick Cave, Massive Attack are the biggest names. But with 170 names in all musical categories, there is a lot to chose from.

Photo: The water in the harbour is 21 celcius. Perfect for a cooling swim.

Drunk students

Now the students are graduating from High school. You will see them with there white caps, and either they are drunk, or have a hangover. Traditionally the students drive around in old open trucks and visit the homes of all the parents of the students. Here the students will be treated with food and drinks (Bubbles). By the end of the day, they will be drunk as hell. Please wave and cheer, when you see them.

So the summer holiday is starting now, and everything is closing down, before Roskilde Festival and Copenhagen Jazz festival is coming in the start of July.

But the city is not entirely dead, and a slow drive will reveale a lot of small unannounced events. And the next couple of weeks it will be all sun and warm summer, for hanging out at the harbour. The summer nights in Copenhagen can be magic, and you wish they never end.
Friday in Christiania, there will be Old school rock at Woodstock. Woodstock is the nearest you come to western salon. With the drugs, but witout the guns. Its free.
Also at Christiania in Operaen there is Soul, to make you dance.

Doktordoktor is soft hiphop playing at Blaagårds Apotek on Nørrebro. A bit futher away from the town center Rock n´Roll is playing for free at Lygtens Kro.

Bolsje Fabrikken have a great dance party on saturday, it is Techno and electronic music. NightCrawlers are doing a big show. It is Free and drinks are cheap, so nothing should stop you from partying until sunrise.

Have a Faboulous weekend

Midsummer, burning the witch, slutwalk and #metoo

It is a tradition since mediavel times, to make a big bonfire on June 23rd Saint Johns (Sankt Hans) evening. It is all over the country and also in Copenhagen. It has for many years been controversial to burn witches (or the symbol of witches) and even more in these #metoo times.
This year the fires are cancelled because of the long drought. So even it has been raining the last week, The Fire Brigade is still making a ban. Instead there are all sort of creative things, like LED lights and other fake fires.
Along the harbour there are many events, so its easy to take a bike ride and find some.

At Reffen in Refshaleøen, they are celebrating Sankt Hans, and Fastpoholmen are playing, and they are a really good Swedish / Danish band.

Slutwalk
is an event to mark that a woman should be free to dress and act, in any way she likes, without being harashed and assulted by men (or other women). You can participate at Rådhuspladsen at 12 midday, and the next couple of hours. (No dress Code ;-))

Saturday is time for Nørrebro Festival at Blågårds Plads. There is the Nørrebro Løb, where kids and grown ups are running around in Nørrebro, and a Flea Market, and bands playing, Barbecue, Circus, entertainment for the kids and other stuff. It all ends in the evening with the fire without fire or witch. Because Nørrebro is NOT celebrating the burning of witches.

And if you are not that much into outdoor fake bonfires and then go inside to Ungdomshuset an find some Hard core Punk

Natasja on friday
Now ten years have passed since danish reggae legend Natasja died in a traffic accident in Jamaica. She is celebrated in a concert at Pumpehuset friday, with the best reggae artists that Copenhagen can find. It should have been at Grey Hall Christianina, but is moved to a smaller location. Tickets at the door.

Friday Night Skate is starting at Solbjerg Plads 8 PM. So grap your rollers and get moving.

Beyonce and Copenhell
Many of my friends  are headbanging at Copenhell. You can find a spot to hear it from the stages. Or climpe the fences… It is more difficult to climp the fences at Parken . Beyonce and Jay-z are playing, but you can hear it from the park next door.

Nemoland Christiania has free concerts every sunday. You can hear really good rock June 24th  when Sandmen from the 1980´s are playing with my favorite  Rock band Bolværket as support. It should have been the other way round. Sandmen supporting Bolværket.

On your way to Christiania you can drop by the Fleamarket in Islands Brygge. Always something good to find, and the opportunity to take a swim in the harbour.
Have a fantastic weekend

Photo: The outdoor Concert saturday at emaljehaven.

National day of Greenland

Is on June 21st. So that is why you see the Greenlandic flags everywhere. It is also summer solstice, and among other places its celebrated at Christiania, where the Sunshine Bakery is hosting an event with live music and DJ´s , and food of course. It is Freetown aid, supporting an orphanage project in Nepal.
And then in Vesterbro, there is something I dont really know what is. But it sounds like a wired experience. But the sentence keeps on coming back in my head: ”CALLING ALL VAMPIRE FEMMES TO FEAST ON FASCIST BLOOD (Yerbamala) ”.

The smaller Live music venues are closing down for the summer, leaving it to the festivals, to take over. Loppen, Alice, Stengade, Amager Bio are all closed, except for some concerts during the Jazz Festival in the second week of july.

But Underwerket is not going down. Wendesday June 20th there is Hardcore with US bans Fury , and two danish support bands.
Ant then Heavy Metal Festival Copenhell starts at thursday at Refshaleøen. 4 days of metal, with a warm up on wendesday. Ozzy, Alice in Chains, Deftones, Nightwish are among the bands playing.

Photo: Sundays Bikewars with Tallbike Knights tournament

K Town

Is the biggest Hardcore punk event in Scandinavia, and it´s  at Ungdomshuset and is all DIY. Three days of bands from all over the world, doing what they are best at: Playing loud and fast!!!

There are a big and a small stage at Ungdomshuset, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. 3 day Tickets are sold out, but you can buy single day tickets at the door. Bring plenty of Cash for the entrance, the bar and the merchandise stands. They take euros.

Bike Wars

Bike wars is not war on bikes, but war with bikes. There are all sorts of crazy home welded bikes, and the game is to smash the other bikes. The bike that last longest wins. And there are also a tall bike knights tournament. It is really entertaining, and with Dj´s playing more hardcore punk for you. At Blågårds Plads sunday at 2 PM.

If you are not that much into hardcore punk, I suggest that you drop by at Operaen in Christiania for some ethnic dancing with Balanga, and some DJ´s performning. Much more quiet and calm than Ungdomshuset.

Metropolis is a Danish forum, who are organising culturel events out in the open. In Nord Vest they are making a performence with a symphonie Orchestra, who are playing in front af the apartments in the building at Emaljehaven It is friday and saturday at 5 and 7 pm. And then it is just a 10 minuts walk to the punk festival at Ungdomshuset 😉

And you can spend your entire weekend in Nordvest, if you go to Nordvest festival, which is also from friday to sunday. Lots of stuff going on . Flea market, food, concerts, theater and dance performances

Art

Charlottenborg is the art school at Nyhavn, and here in the weekend, they are opening the doors so you can come and see what the students are working with right now. Prepare for a hold range of new art, and you can meet some of the artist there, and they can explain what sort of world they are expericing. It is called Rundgang

At the Kaospilot project they are also a little arty, and they are celebrating there new team is finished. So there is another party for you at Refshaleøen.

And Eid Mubarak to all Muslims here and abroad

Cool off…

Two psycedelic concerts

The temperatures are taking a drop, so now we will have some more ”normal” danish summer. But the water is still warm, so it is nice to go swimming. And that also makes it more endurable to be at indoor concerts
There are two nice psycedelic concerts in the next couple of days. At Pumpehuset there is Coven a band dating back to the late 60´s and early 70´s. They are supported by Danish Demon Head. So be prepared for some Dark mystic psycedelic.

At Lygtens Kro on wendesday there is Italian Psycedelic rock with ”The Trip Takers”, so that sounds fun. Not because I take a lot of trips, but I like the music. 🙂

K- town punk festival

Is taking place next weekend, and I will update you on that in the next writing. But while you wait, you can go to Underwerket on thursday. They are making a warm up, with some of the most brilliant bands on the Copenhagen Punk / Metal scene. Ond Tro, Halshug, The war goes on, Skam and Bliss. I have to remember my ear plugs. 😉

Soccer
The world championships starts thursday. This year there is no outdoor big screen, where you can come and see the matches, and drink ypur own cold beer. You have to go to some of the bars, and pay for there expensive draft beer.
The Denmark – Peru match on saturday will be shown at Parken, and there is a free entrance. But then you have to buy the expensive beer.
But check out bars, and find a cool place where you can enjoy your game.

Photo festival, Photos from above

Photo festival is taken place with 57 different excibitions, spread out over the city. It is the next 10 days, and there is both history and art. As a dedicated photographer I sure will check out some of the things there. It is not only in Copenhagen, but also in Malmø. The main place is at ”Photo City” In Copenhagen Østerbro.

A night at the Opera

Operaen at Cristiania have a evening with Showmen, Jugglers, sword swallowers and much more. There is bands playing, and a night disco. It is FridayJune 8th

Instrumental reggae sound interesting and more like a jam, than actual numbers. Stengade on Nørrebro has it, and it will be hot and crowded, and it is almost sold out. Local Reggae performers are doing what they are best at.

Stop torture are making a concert at Kongens Have Saturday June 9th . It is with Teitur from Faroe islands and Danish X factor winners Place on Earth and Noah as a headline. Also entertainment for the kids. If you join this concert, please contribute with some money or a buy the beer or give a signature. They are doing a great job and need some support.

Get a ride

Hitchhiking has never been a big thing i Denmark. It has always been difficult to get a ride out of Copenhagen. But now there is opening official places to hitchhike out of Copenhagen. It is at 4 different places going north, west and south. We still need a place for going East towards Sweden. It is celebrated with an event on saturday June 9th from 9 morning to 6 evening.

Pictures from above

The French Photographer Yann Arthus-bertrand is making an event where he wants to have pictures and films of poeple with Bikes. It is on Israel Square Sunday June 10th at 5 PM. Check the event here.
It will be used in a new book, So be there at the square and be part of the event.
