48 Years. Happy Birthday Christiania. And a long middle Finger to the Money addicted violent pusher types in the Street

Another week is coming up. The weather have gone into Autumn mode, and I am finding my hand gloves, the warm rain jacket and the winter boots.
Dress up well on Friday when we (You, Me and everybody else) are turning up for the biggest Climate demonstrations by Grown ups. While Greta Thunberg is speaking Thunder in UN, we are not sitting and waiting for things to happen. So meet up at Ofelia Square, by the harbour.

Sports
Its the 10 years Birthday of Copenhagen Roller Derby Team. They are competing other teams in 3 bashes. “All you need to know in advance is that roller derby is hard hitting, fast paced and a hole lot of confusion. ”. The event takes place in DGI byen and Doors opens at 1.30

Live music

Wednesday 25th
At Hotel Cecil they have a visit from US/ Greek Simrit. Its a well sounding mix of Folk, and West African (Salif Keita) rhythms, with a spiritual essence to it. In fact, its not bad to listen to. So this is my Wednesday recommendation.

I don’t like Royal Arena. Its too big, you have to sit down, and the Distance to the stage is enormous. So I am not going to Alice Cooper, but you can still get tickets if you want to see the legend.

Thursday 26th
Congratulations to the good people of Christiania: 48 years today. And a long Fuck off finger to the violent, money addicted dope dealers, who are ruining there own and others life’s. Find somewhere else to do your business. Legalize Cannabis. Its on time.
A lot of the live music venues, cafes and bars are having events. Check out Loppen
Operaen,
Woodstock
Nemoland
Månefiskeren
And there are more party’s, that are not announced anywhere. You can even make your own little party in you mind. 😀

In Lille Vega, they have a visit from the North Carolina band – Between me and the Buried. It sounds like something in between 1970´s Kraut Rock and progressive metal. Check them out, they are something special. Super fine musicians, that have been touring with Lamb of God, Mastodon.

For some Catchy indie Pop, head for Ideal Bar at Vega. From Germany its Leoniden, who are performing with a cool energy. They are big stars down south of the Border, and I bet the bar will be filled with German fans.

Friday 27th
In Ungeren, they have a Post Punk outline – Amanda X from Pennsylvania – USA. Local Enids are supporting with more Post Punk.

Mxrphy is a new rapper on the Copenhagen Scene. Just made a new album – Hafnia – . He is the new hope, and are performing the hold album on Loppen. Maybe its now, you should see him, before he hits the rest of the country. You never know…

Maybe they still have a hangover from the party, the day before, but at Operaen, they just smoke a joint, and feeeeel okay, and are presenting a new party with Brazilian Rhythms from Trypical Cumbria. So Polish up you dance shoes and find your best clothes

Thurston Moore is one of the most influencing musicians in Noise rock. Since The Sonic Youth Days he has been an inspiration for countless bands. Now he is solo with his own band, and are performing at a small place like Alice in Nørrebro. There is an afternoon and an evening concert, and I had a plan to go there, but now i´ve cancelled so I sold my tickets. 😦

For some Electronic dance event, Beat are arranging a party at Matrikel 1 at Højbro Plads. Steen Kong and Kiowa are turning the Tables, and your feet are moving.

Saturday 28th
For new Copenhagen Electro Pop, head for Shy Shy Shy at Loppen. Professional sound, but can they also do it on stage? They have a hit for the score to the Danish DR Doggystyle TV series.

At Alice there is a support party for the Folkradio FM radio station. So a lot of local Folk bands are coming, and you can expect screaming fiddles in your ear. Bring my mind back to the folk party’s in Ungdomshuset in the 1980´s.

You can hit the Dance floor at Hotel Cecil in the late night, with Soul Explosion X. Opens up at 11 PM

Fabled Mind, is a Copenhagen punk band, who are making a release concert at Underwerket in Valby. Its post Hard Core / Pop Punk in there own descriptions. So good that there are new bands in Punk.

Monday 30th
For this Monday I advise you to go to Pumpehuset and listen to French Nouvelle Vague. They are making Jazzy / Bossa Nova covers of old Classics like “To Drunk to Fuck”, “Love will tear us apart”, and “Have you ever been in love” by The Buzzocks. It sounds like a funny evening.

Shokran is the Arab word for thank you, but also the name of a Russian Prog metal band. For the first time they are here in Denmark, and are performing at Underwerket. They are supported by three Bands: Wings Denied from Washington DC, Hanging The Nihilist (DK) and Exelerate (DK)

Tuesday October 1st
There is a Egyptian Movie festival at Cinemateket. Therefore the Cairo based band Lekhfa are playing at Alice. The members are coming from the Alternative Arab scene, and its a blend of traditional Arabic Folk and bit of psych.

David Bowie, Bono, Thom Yorke, The Strokes and Pavement has all named Pixies as a favourite band, and Kurt Cobain, said that this is here he got the inspiration to Loud-Quiet-Loud build up. So in KB Hallen you are invited to a legendary band, who has been an inspiration to numerous musicians. It will be good. 🙂

If Blues came from Denmark it would be called “The Grey”…

In Denmark its more like you are feeling Grey. After the weather and the lack of sunshine. Its when your lover has left you, the cat pissed in your bed, its raining and your bike has a puncture.  So thats whats its like to have a “Grey feeling”.

So here are the best things to do in Copenhagen this grey week in November.

Tuesday
In Loppen they have visitors from the other side of the Globe. Orchestra of Spheres (NZ) are here and are on the stage with aprupte rhythms and a bit experimental. I am thinking of Brian Eno. Supported by Local Red Lama playing Psych Kraut Rock.

Wendesday
I saw them at this years Roskilde Festival (I think ;-)) Pumpehuset are welcoming Skeleton Witch from Ohio, US with there Trash – black – dead metal. Supported by Mantar from somewhere in Germany.

In Amagerbio you can meet Dan Baird and the Homemade Sin Former Georgia Satellites guitar hero, so its south state rock, n´roll. By mistake I posted this in last weeks letter, but shit happens. So here we go again. 😉

Christiania Jazzclub Has the very prominent official adress: 1 Pusher Street.   LSD: Lindborg/Sjöstedt/Daniel are doing some jazz on this boring wendesday. So smoke some dope and forget about thursday.  Cash Only

Thursday
The only thing I can find on this thursday is at Loppen. They are having visitors from Canadian West Coast with Crack Cloud, who are a collective performing Vancouver experimental avantgarde post punk. Support is himmelrum with more minimalistic experimental sounds.

Friday
The Lake is a online radio Station, and they describe themselves as a place for music and sounds. There is a support party at Alicecph in Nørrebro.

Just around a couple of corners in Nørrbro you can find Stengade, with Swedish Agent Side Grinder performing. Its Electronic industrial and the legacy goes back to Kraftwerk. Afterparty with Dj´s .

In Ungeren, Nordvest. Its two Black Metal bands from the US with very gifted musicians: Yellow Eyes and Anicon playing very melodic going into Stoner. Remember ear Plugs!!! Cash Only!!!

In Vega, Vesterbro. Lydmor, just came back with a new album after spending some time in China. Electronic well sounding pop. You can sign up at the Waiting List

Aysha Loren from UK are welcomed at Operaen Christiania. Its Reggae and R´n´B. She singes beautifully with her dancing music. It makes you feel good. Come in good time as it can be sold out fast, and there are only tickets at the door. Cash Only.

We only have a few Ska bands in Copenhagen. At Cafe Bartof, Frederiksberg you can experince the very first: Napoleon Solo are still very ambitious and this is a release concert. So find your suit, your sunglasses and your hat.

Saturday
No wedding without dancing!!!
If you want a trip into modern turkish psych wedding and party music, then head for Alicecph, where you will find Cüneyt Sepetci playing on his horn.

A indoor Distortion party with only Afrobeat, is what you need in November. Live acts and DJ´s is in Pumpehuset, so a lot of dancing and sweaty people.

Theres more West African music in Operaen, Christiania. Mofro Danish / Ghanian Afro Beat and Highlife It will get you warm and dry in the cold and rainy winter.

In Vega, Vesterbro Danish Oh Land is on the poster with poppy tunes, celebrating her debut ten years ago. And she is getting better and better with the time.

The Blues is in the Grey Hall, Christiania when good old Walter Trout with Chicago blues rock. Arranged by Amagerbio, but they are rebuilding the concert hall so its in the Grey Hall.

Underwerket in Valby has 20 below with chewing cum punk rock with a clear guitar Supported by 3 local bands doing skater punk.

Sunday
What to do on a rainy Sunday? Well you can go for some of the locals at Cph listening Room on Halmtorvet, Vesterbro Its a Weekly singer song Writer venue. Everything is run by volunteers, and it should be real hygge. So drop inn by on a sunday. 🙂
Another place for jamming on a Sunday is Operaen Christiania, where there is also a open stage.

Tremonti from Greed is here with his solo project. Its guitar and the voice sounds a bit like local metal band Volbeat. Tremonti has a new Concept album about the Robots taking over. Its in Vega.

What else to do besides listening to music?
Cocktails and Science in Byens Lys Christiania are presenting another Neerdy theme: this time its about new materials. What does the future look like, and what can it offer? What can we do with all this new material stuff – and do we really need it? Its free, but the bar acceptes Cash Only!!! Thursday November 15th,

You can join the party with the local Roller Derby Stars. Its a double header meaning two games on  Saturday afternoon in DGI Byen against Teams from Bryssels, Belgium and Sweden. It will be super exciting to cheer on the girls.

Sauna and Hygge time. Blues Festival, LGBTQ Movie Festival, and more…

It seems like autumn is finally arriving with colder nights, the leaves are falling of the trees, and we can dig the indoor Hygge atmophere with a piano man and candle lights.

And it is still possible to take a dip in the cold water in the harbour. You can rent a Sauna, and sit there and get really hot and sweatty, go outside, and jump in cold water, and up again and back to the sauna. Here are som suggestions, and then you can check out the one that fits you best. :
https://copenhot.com/services/
http://butchersheat.dk
http://www.inipi.dk
Also the Art Hall at Charlottenborg have a sauna installation in the court yard. And it is really beautifull with the Golden egg, but I dont see any cold bath near by, so mayby you just have to stay sweatty.

Its also time to go to the movies, and here you can for example go to Husets biograf in Rådhusstræde. They have all sort of weird – Bad Taste – B Films – Cult Movies – that you have never heard off. Check out there program here.
In the Cinemateque at Gothersgade there is a LGBTQ film Festival going on in the next week, starting friday October 26 and continuing the next 10 days.

And Lonely Planet Books have anoounced that Copenhagen is the best city to visit in 2019!!! That is both good and bad. It means that I will have more to do as a tourist guide, but also that prices will be rising, and for the locals, it can be difficult to find places to go, where there are no tourist. I am surprised how mainstream they are. There are a lot of other stuff than Nyhavn and Tivoli.

Live Music

Blues festival
Autumn is the right time for a Blues Festival, where you can sit and get a bit glommy, and feel sorry for yourself. Most bands are local, but there are also US and European bands playing. Its from wendesday to sunday and Mojo is one of the places to go.

Wendesday
Kakkmaddafakka is a fantastic band name, and I heard them at this years Roskilde Festival. They are from Norway and play a sort of indie dance-friendly simpel pop music.
Pumpehuset are hosting Kakkmaddafakka.

Thursday
Going for some fast guitar / Punk rock on a Thursday? Head for Stengade and The Coathangers which is an all girl band from Atlanta, US. I will most propaply be there for some thursday action.

If you are more into electronic trance, Go to the Grey Hall at Christiania (Den Grå Hal) where you can find “Above and Beyond” from UK. The Hall is quite small for a band of this size, so I dont know if they are bringing there whole visuals. It will be a cool event.

Weird Friday

We stay with Stengade in Nørrebro for another cool concert. Acid Mothers Temple & The Melting Paraiso U.F.O. !!! :-0 are from Japan, and for this concert you are really in for some weird improvised stuff. But mayby it will open up your mind to another level. Who knows?

Another weird place is Woodstock and Ben Gillespie. I dont really know what it is, but concerts at Woodstock, Pusher Street, Christiania are always worth going for. So you get a chance to take in the scene with the local hangouts.

And for some more weird and also electronic is Robin Fox from down under performing at Alicecph in Nørrebro. Its very electronic. Prepare yourself for being blasted out.

Saturday
I am not a big fan of Halloween. Thinks it a big phony, and I dont get the concept. Mayby for kids, put in this respect I am not a kid. But at Ungeren in Nordvest they have a Halloween Party with a Misfits cover band and cheap scary cocktails.

One of my favorite Vesterbro bars is Mærkbar at Vesterbrogade. Its a small room, so when a band is performing its very packed. Saturday ”Vi er fædre” are giving a concert and its a good idea to remember your earplugs. Loud and fast.

Sunday
Did you get tickets for The Vaccines? The British band is performing in a place like Lille Vega and in a small place like this it can be a fantastic concert. Playing all there hits, it is great 10.000 people festival band. But here they are. I am looking out for a ticket. 🙂

Last concert of the week is at Islands Brygge Culture House, with some big band performing all the classics from the 1950´s With a great crooner in front, and a lot of horns. Hay Burner is the name.

Tremendous Tuesday, Friday culture night and dancing on a Saturday

Culture is where ever we look, what we hear, feel, taste and smell. And on friday it is  Kulturnat – Culture Night – in Copenhagen, for the 25th time. A lot of  institutions are openning there doors, and there are all sort of events, live music, lectures and much more. It is museums Academies, Schools, Universities, galleries, und so weiter. In the old city you will see that there are loads of people walking around. But it is also in the neighboorhoods, The pass gives you access to everything, cost 95 Kr. and can be bougtht at Libraries and other official institutions, and at 7-11 kiosks.

You will get a lot wiser if you go to Science and Cocktails on tuesday. This time its about the mysterium of plants, and what makes them grow and prosper. Really neerdie, but it is also with cocktails. Free entry, and bring cash for the drinks. Byens Lys Cinema in Christiania.

Live Music.
I cant recall a tuesday evening being so packed with good live Music as Octobder 9th.
In the Grey Hall, Christiania, Beach House are performing with there light singer – song writer, indie music. It is sold out, but if you are lucky you can find tickets outside. Dont pay more than is says on the ticket. The Grey Hall is the perfect place for a concert like this, where the atmophere get really intense. I Love that place. 😉

And if that is not enough for you on a tuesday continue to Loppen, where there is Hip Hop playing for you. LE1F is dropping by for some of that very fast mouth. With a lot of fantasie and an open gay attitude, he is very special in the Hip Hop Community.

I saw Slaves performing at this years Roskilde Festival, and now they are back, playing punk rock with only drums and a Guitar. Its high energy and full power on there performance in Lille Vega Vesterbro. Also Tuesday.

If you are into some more heavy stoner and psych then head to KB 18  and Acid Kings. Only go if you dont mind a hard sound, and a lot of Craffiti.

Dont come and say that nothing happens on a tuesday in Copenhagen. 😀

Wendesday
2nd Blood are normally on the biggest festival stages in the summer, but here they are at Loppen for an exclusive concert. And it is not even sold out for this electronic dj duo, that are used to crowds of 10000 dancing youngsters. The have visits from Trentemøller and a member from Den sorte Skole. I dont understand why this isnt long sold out.

If Kulturnatten on friday is too much, Go to outer Nørrebro: Even in the middle of October there are some people who are still making a good old street Party. It is the Former squad house Bumzen who are hosting with DJ´s and cheap drinks in the bar. Hope it can make us warm in the cold cold night.

Not so fra away from Bumzen there are a Black metal koncert with Solbrud, and it is taking place in the Tagensbro Church. They have played in a church in Aarhus two years ago which was controversial. Solbrud is part of the new wave of danish metal, that are ruling the waves these years.

Go a little further towards Nordvest and you find Ungdomshuset, where Motorsav is playing with two bands that I dont know. Finnish and Swedish. As usually its cash only, cheap and warm beeers. .

On saturday there is another Psych / Stoner rock band at KB 18. Seems like its the thing right now when Magic Shoppe is playing.

And there is more Hardcore for your worn out ears at Pumpehuset and Købernhardcore, with british Peckerhead as the main name, followed by a hole line up of new local names.

Saturday allright for dancing

This saturday there are an abundance of good dance Partys.

Dance like nobody is watching is at the Absalon Church in Vesterbro, with host dj´s making your hips move. You can dress up in your best dance dress, or just show up in the good old blue jeans.

Rarely you hear Old School 1970´s disco but you can go to Operaen, Pusherstreet, Christiania, and dance to Royal Feet Factory. They sure have listened to 1970´s Saturday Night Fever and Gloria Gayner. Bring Cash!!!

Katrine Ring and Martin Tjek are hosting another Dance event Funkdown  in Søhesten, so another place to go for your Saturday dance night.

Pisstortion, Police, Pushers and Play It

Distortion
The neighboors hate it: The stink of piss and shit and old beer. They hate the broken glass puncturing the bikes. They hate the loud music that should end at 10 PM but the party keeps on going.
The kids from the suburbs love it. Here is a change to get really drunk, make a date, listen to some good music and dance in the streets. Wendesday on Nørrebro, Thursday on Vesterbro, before it moves out to Refshaleøen in the weekend, and becomes a party where you have to pay an entry fee, and cant bring your own alcohol.  Check it out
I probaply join the party one both Nørrebro and Vesterbro, but more like a observant, looking at the crazyness going on. And drinking a few beers of course. You can buy a bracelet to support the street party. The full deal for all five days (incl. Sunday) is 550 Kr.

The Street

At Christiania the situation on Pusher street is getting worse. On friday the local people opened up The Street again, after throwing out some of the younger dope dealers. But then the police announce that now they want to make visits everyday. And both saturday and monday morning they came with there trucks and chainsaws and removed all the stands. The result can be seen here at Nørrebro where I am living. The pushers at Nørrebro Parken have stepped up and placed guards around. So it can only go from bad to worse, with another gang war coming up. So over the summer we will have drive by shootings again, and more people filling the jails. And more people with PTSD.
It is sad that the danish government is so conservative and without visions.

Play It – Play it Sam

Stengade at Nørrebro has an open mic evening every month or now and then. You can bring your Guitar and check out your latest composition before a live audience. It is of course free, and you can sit and hang around. Its been a tradition since the 1990´s , and the staff works voluntarily. So a big hand for that.

Photo: Young Skaters ready to move at Vesterbro Skatepark, Enghave Plads. See how they copy the grown up guys. 😉

Pusher street

Things are happening at Christiania. The famous Pusher Street, where you can buy illegal cannabis products, have been closed by the local residents at Christiania. Tuesday may 22nd in the morning, the Street was sealed of by a fence, and som black curtains. So all trade has stopped, and it is not possible to buy any stuff.
My normal source is out of town, but rumours tells that they are tired of very young pushers ( down to 16 years), that are trying to control it. Also the everyday fighting with the police, and the many arrests has led to this action. They say The Pusher Street will open up again on friday, ”in a new and more hyggelig way”. It will be exciting to see what happens, and I will keep you updated. If you really need to buy something to smoke, ask around. And dont buy in the streets leading up to Christiania.
And as usually, the police wants to ”cooperate”. The rest of Christiania is open, so you can still visit it.
In my humble opinion the only thing to do, is to legalize cannabis, but it seems like there is a long way to go in conservative Denmark.
