Dancing in September

There are still a lot of outdoor activities even though we are in the middle of september and its getting colder.

Dancing
Detour is a dance festival taking place mostly at Frederiksberg at the Edison Theater. Its a lot of new urban dancing – Hip Hop – Only Female – and much more. Most of it in the coming weekend and with a different program every day.

Dont fear the weird
We all now this about weirdness. It is somehow repulsive, but yet, you cant help to be a little attracted to it. Letting yourself lose control. And it is theme in many movies, like Scorseses Taxi Driver. I have some friends that I call weird, whatever they are suffering from. Weirdness is the theme for the four day film festival that is presented in Cinemateket,  and arranged together with different psychiatric organisations. Runs from Tuesday September 11th to Friday 14th .

Folkets Hus in Nørrebro, has just reopened after being closed for almost a year, because of trouble with the local gangs. Wendesday they are making a birthday party. With vegan food, music, films, quiz and storytelling.
If you like a more loud evening, go to Raahuset, Vesterbro  for some italian Ska / punk band, with two danish warm up bands.

Thursday in Mayhem, the electronic scene in Østerbro, near the Candy Factory. The perfect spot for a industrial evening with bands from Australia and Germany. Arranged by  Bragagild.

Also very experimental is Embryo, that is legendary Jazz / Kraut Rock band formed in Germany 1969. Also very Frank Zappa like, but non of the original members are left in the band. They are playing thursday at Alice in Nørrebro.

In one of my favorite bars – Lygtens Kro, Nørrebro – they are having a visit from France when The Baked Beans (What a name for a french band) is dropping by, playing there 1960´s psychedelic garage rock, and supported by Danish FYR. Thats on thursday 14th .

More french is at the Opera in Christiania, when they have rappers dropping by. Could be a fun evening with Hip Hop in french. Its on friday

More friday evening is the small cafe of Kimia, in Blågårdsgade, Nørrebro, where they are having Reggae icon Princess T giving a DJ set. Its often very nice with these evenings in Kimia. Hygge and so so.

Loppen has Fastpoholmen playing. The are danish/ swedish and are a local band. (Like in very very local). Folk and a bit of ethnic. Expect a big party.

This weeks Death Metal is out at Ungdomshuset, with bands playing Saturday and Sunday. It is part of the big birthday party that takes place in all September. Remember ear plugs!!!

Street party at The Red Square

In The Red Square at Nørrebro there is a big street party celebrating the etnical divercity of the neighbourhood. It continues on Sunday, when the main street – Nørrebrogade is closed, so there is chalk drawing at the street, a flea market and shops are selling for cheap prices. A nice day. This is because the annual Half Marathon are closing the street anyway. So why not make it into a party.

Mexico is far away, but on Saturday it comes a bit closer when the Mexican Embassy is celebrating the Mexican independence day. It with bands, food and I except som tequila as well. And not cheap stuff they sell in the supermarkets, but the real thing. At Blågårds plads. Nørrebro.

Photo: Feridah Rose performing at the World Music Festival last week

Autumn has hit the country, and we will turn more towards indoor activities. The live music venues are opening up again, and we are reaching the last outdoor performances.

If you wonder about the high security level in the center of Copenhagen, it is because President Macron of France is on a official visit. It is tuesday and wendesday.

Freedom Music Festival  is a 6 day indoor thing starting Tuesday. Taking place at Koncertkirken in Blågårds Plads and at Cinemateket at Gothersgade. It is mostly something like improvisasions from all over the world and just a couple of concerts at day. Organised by Troels from Insula Music record shop.

Another small festival is Copenhagen Song Writers Festival , lasting for five days and starting on wendesday. A lot of hopefull local talents with a guitar are turning up. Might be here we are finding the next Leonard Cohen 🙂
It is at Raahuset – Onkel Danny Plads at Vesterbro.

Nordic fado

On friday you can find this Little concert at the Cafe Globen where the Fado of Portugal will meet the folk music of Scandinavia. It is nothing big, but it sure will bring you in a good mood. My good friend Anne is playing the Violin, and I can say without lying, that she is the best in Denmark with a fiddle

Slap stick – tight rope
With something inbetween a clown and a super tightrope walker this is something special to watch. Miettes from France are performing, and there are free tickets here in the weekend. Its at three different venues, and I think it will an experience of a lifetime. I have booked tickets to Thursday August 30th . Arranged by Metropolis.

More bodies moving
Origami is the japanese art of paper folding. I dont know how it is possible to combine Origami with shipping containers and dancing. But this is what is happening at Ofelia Plads at the harbour and Skuespilhuset (The Playhouse). It is Saturday and Sunday september 1st and 2nd .

More Live music
Three of the best live music venues are opening up after the summer break. Loppen with Local Indie band Two Trick Pony playing on friday Augsut 31st . The day before GZA from Wu Tang clan is performing, but it is sold out. And there is something for you Black metal hearts when danish Solbrud is playing Sunday sepetember 2nd. This could turn out to be a very good concert.

At Alice you can find the new program with world and jazz music. And here I will mention the Thurday concert with ghanesian King Ayisoba, and especially the friday concert with Saharan desert blues Bombino. Its sold out, so you have to try your luck at the door, or check facebook for tickets in excess.

And Ungdomshuset in Nordwest are making a 10 years birthday month with all sort of concerts and other events. Remember the Folkekøkken every thursday at 6 o´clock with vegan food. Friday 31st there is a really super line up, speareheaded by Lucy Love playing grime, but you can also find Copenhagen punk legends President Fetch and War Of Destruction.

Back to the future
What to do on a sunday with a hangover? For the nerds you can go to Cinemateket and the Back to the future film triology. 6 hours of film starting in the afternoon, and going well into the evening. Its in english with danish subtitles.

LGBTQ Pride Week is now

The school holidays are over, so the kids are back at the desks, and the traffic is back in the street, and the ”Normal” danish summer weather is back. Hope you enjoyed the holiday. We awakes to reality once again.

Pride week
One of the biggest partys are again hitting Copenhagen. Pride week is coming with big shows everyday at the Town Hall square. But there are also loads of other shows going on around the rainbow square with LGBTQ debates, and people from all over the world dropping by. It all culminates on saturday with the big parade, and the whole city center around the Town Hall Square will be a party zone.
I should mention that some people are talking about that the pride is being to commercial, and there is an altenative – non commercial – pride taking place in Nørrebro.

Nowtopia
I dont know quite what it is, but you can join the forces in the Grey Hall at Christiania in the coming week. Nowtopia sounds very experimental, but check it out. It might be a lot of fun, with act and music and all sorts of performances. Open your mind.

Happy 400 years

Christianshavn is now 400 years old!!! And they are celebrating with a big party in the center of this area, with a lot of bands playing, and activities for kids and grown ups. Local institutions are opening there doors to the public, there is a lot of food an drinks. This will turn out to be a very good and Hygge party.

Clock is ticking
Another Dance performance, “for the time being”, this time at Pakhus 11 in Østerbro.  It takes the concept of time and puts it upside down, to make you confused, and to try to stop it and put it into a vacuum. Metropolis is the arranger.

Solange.
First came Beyonce and Jay Z, and wendesday it is little sister. At Tivoli they are celebrating 175 years of amusement, with a concert with Solange . It is ”Free” if you pay the entrance, or if you have a Tivoli card.

A short walk from Tivoli at Pumpehuset, there is another free concert with australian metal band Northlane. And this is a quite a big metal band for such a small venue, so it is a good chance to get your ears filled. It might be the occasion for a good mosh Pit.
Visit from out of California

In Christiania at Operaen they have a concert with a sort of collective that are on a tour of Europe, with alle sorts of acts. I am not entirely sure about what´s it all about, but it sounds fun, and with a lot of entertainment.

Ether or Æter
At Ungdomshuset they are awekening after the summerbreak. Club Æter is hosting an event with a lot of international DIY bands. And they are serving Sangria, with a lot of fruit and booze.

While the pride LGBTQ is all about partying, and having a good time, there is more disciplin for the contesters in the Ironman Compepetition taking place on sunday. Big parts of the central city will be shut down, andn you can stand and cheer at the exausted contenders.

And while all this happens I am going to the Gutter Island garage Rock festival in Vordingborg, 2 hours drive south of Copenhagen.

Life is more than Jazz

I am back from four days at Roskilde Festival, with some fantastic people, music, moments and atmosphere. And after sleeping two days, also back at the desk.
The Jazz festival is rolling with full steam. It is easy to find the good cheap concerts. You just click at free concerts and the date, and you can find them. At Balders Plads  in Outer Nørrebro they have a very good program, with a lot of local musicians.
Also at Kongens Have in Central Copenhagen have free concerts with good bands. For late night you can head to Christiania Jazzklub at Børneteatret. It isn´t free but its cheap and with a little smoke in your lungs you can find really nice concerts.

Art

Not everything is jazz. CC – short for Copenhagen Contemporary – has opened in new rooms at Refshaleøen. It is 7000 m2 big and the opening show is the Superflex Group doing there London Tate show from last year. I haven´t check it yet, but that will come soon.

Street Partys

On friday 13th  Rust  makes a street party outside of there venue in Guldbergsgade. They Cooperate with the independant Hip Hop Label Affiliated, so you can drop by and listen to some of the sweetest Hip Hop That Copenhagen can produce right now. Starts at 4 pm and officially ends at 10, but no surprice if the party continues into the long summer night.

You can cotinue straigtht to another Street party in Nørrebro, with Bas Under Buen. Reggae, dancehall, dubstep, UK garage, dub, steppas, drum & bass, UK bass, trap. Everything with a heavy bas. Thats Saturday July 14th, with by the way is my birthday.

Underwerket

If you are tired of all the sun and positiveness and are feeling more dark and glommy go to Underwerket at Saturday 14 th. Legendary hardcore punk band MDC – Millions of Dead Cops – are playing with German Scheisse Minelli. It is a very small room, so remember your ear Plugs. But very cheap beer.
At Ungdomshuset you can also find cheap beer end Hardcore punk with Swedish band Lonely Grave.

Move your body!!!

The Move festival is all about moving your body. There is dancing, yoga, slackline, parkour, lectures and much more. The Festival takes place at Refshaleøen, and I think that you are free to join all the classes. Next year i might do some Tai Chi or Chi kung classes. 😉

I take a holiday
Next week I am taking a holiday, so no updates from me. But Loppen at Christiania have their own outdoor Loppen Festival, with local bands. It is right outside the venue at Christiania from Friday 20th to Sunday 22nd July, and its free, but please support and buy your beer and sodas there.

Midsummer, burning the witch, slutwalk and #metoo

It is a tradition since mediavel times, to make a big bonfire on June 23rd Saint Johns (Sankt Hans) evening. It is all over the country and also in Copenhagen. It has for many years been controversial to burn witches (or the symbol of witches) and even more in these #metoo times.
This year the fires are cancelled because of the long drought. So even it has been raining the last week, The Fire Brigade is still making a ban. Instead there are all sort of creative things, like LED lights and other fake fires.
Along the harbour there are many events, so its easy to take a bike ride and find some.

At Reffen in Refshaleøen, they are celebrating Sankt Hans, and Fastpoholmen are playing, and they are a really good Swedish / Danish band.

Slutwalk
is an event to mark that a woman should be free to dress and act, in any way she likes, without being harashed and assulted by men (or other women). You can participate at Rådhuspladsen at 12 midday, and the next couple of hours. (No dress Code ;-))

Saturday is time for Nørrebro Festival at Blågårds Plads. There is the Nørrebro Løb, where kids and grown ups are running around in Nørrebro, and a Flea Market, and bands playing, Barbecue, Circus, entertainment for the kids and other stuff. It all ends in the evening with the fire without fire or witch. Because Nørrebro is NOT celebrating the burning of witches.

And if you are not that much into outdoor fake bonfires and then go inside to Ungdomshuset an find some Hard core Punk

Natasja on friday
Now ten years have passed since danish reggae legend Natasja died in a traffic accident in Jamaica. She is celebrated in a concert at Pumpehuset friday, with the best reggae artists that Copenhagen can find. It should have been at Grey Hall Christianina, but is moved to a smaller location. Tickets at the door.

Friday Night Skate is starting at Solbjerg Plads 8 PM. So grap your rollers and get moving.

Beyonce and Copenhell
Many of my friends  are headbanging at Copenhell. You can find a spot to hear it from the stages. Or climpe the fences… It is more difficult to climp the fences at Parken . Beyonce and Jay-z are playing, but you can hear it from the park next door.

Nemoland Christiania has free concerts every sunday. You can hear really good rock June 24th  when Sandmen from the 1980´s are playing with my favorite  Rock band Bolværket as support. It should have been the other way round. Sandmen supporting Bolværket.

On your way to Christiania you can drop by the Fleamarket in Islands Brygge. Always something good to find, and the opportunity to take a swim in the harbour.
Have a fantastic weekend

National day of Greenland

Is on June 21st. So that is why you see the Greenlandic flags everywhere. It is also summer solstice, and among other places its celebrated at Christiania, where the Sunshine Bakery is hosting an event with live music and DJ´s , and food of course. It is Freetown aid, supporting an orphanage project in Nepal.
And then in Vesterbro, there is something I dont really know what is. But it sounds like a wired experience. But the sentence keeps on coming back in my head: ”CALLING ALL VAMPIRE FEMMES TO FEAST ON FASCIST BLOOD (Yerbamala) ”.

The smaller Live music venues are closing down for the summer, leaving it to the festivals, to take over. Loppen, Alice, Stengade, Amager Bio are all closed, except for some concerts during the Jazz Festival in the second week of july.

But Underwerket is not going down. Wendesday June 20th there is Hardcore with US bans Fury , and two danish support bands.
Ant then Heavy Metal Festival Copenhell starts at thursday at Refshaleøen. 4 days of metal, with a warm up on wendesday. Ozzy, Alice in Chains, Deftones, Nightwish are among the bands playing.

Photo: Sundays Bikewars with Tallbike Knights tournament

K Town

Is the biggest Hardcore punk event in Scandinavia, and it´s  at Ungdomshuset and is all DIY. Three days of bands from all over the world, doing what they are best at: Playing loud and fast!!!

There are a big and a small stage at Ungdomshuset, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. 3 day Tickets are sold out, but you can buy single day tickets at the door. Bring plenty of Cash for the entrance, the bar and the merchandise stands. They take euros.

Bike Wars

Bike wars is not war on bikes, but war with bikes. There are all sorts of crazy home welded bikes, and the game is to smash the other bikes. The bike that last longest wins. And there are also a tall bike knights tournament. It is really entertaining, and with Dj´s playing more hardcore punk for you. At Blågårds Plads sunday at 2 PM.

If you are not that much into hardcore punk, I suggest that you drop by at Operaen in Christiania for some ethnic dancing with Balanga, and some DJ´s performning. Much more quiet and calm than Ungdomshuset.

Metropolis is a Danish forum, who are organising culturel events out in the open. In Nord Vest they are making a performence with a symphonie Orchestra, who are playing in front af the apartments in the building at Emaljehaven It is friday and saturday at 5 and 7 pm. And then it is just a 10 minuts walk to the punk festival at Ungdomshuset 😉

And you can spend your entire weekend in Nordvest, if you go to Nordvest festival, which is also from friday to sunday. Lots of stuff going on . Flea market, food, concerts, theater and dance performances

Art

Charlottenborg is the art school at Nyhavn, and here in the weekend, they are opening the doors so you can come and see what the students are working with right now. Prepare for a hold range of new art, and you can meet some of the artist there, and they can explain what sort of world they are expericing. It is called Rundgang

At the Kaospilot project they are also a little arty, and they are celebrating there new team is finished. So there is another party for you at Refshaleøen.

And Eid Mubarak to all Muslims here and abroad
