The slowest week of the year.

I hope you had a nice new years night, and a safe entry into 2019. So now we are in January, and have to keep up the good spirit in the cold and dark month. It can be difficult. I consider January the worst of all months. And we are all low on money because December is so awfully expensive.

And that is why some of the best live music venues are closed. Loppen, Alice, Underwerket and many more don´t open up, until later in the month.
And in this week the live music acts are almost non existing. But I present to you the few good ones.

But then the Movie theatres are open, and both Cinemateket and Huset have some good series of films. Like Terry Gilliam movies (Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Brazil)

Thursday
The Thursday cafe at Operaen, in Christiania are free entry, and The Freetown Social Club are having there monthly club. It can be hygge, and a good jamming session at the stage. No cards! Cash only.

Friday

The only arrangement worth mentioning is at one of the smallest venues in Copenhagen. Christiania Jazzclub, has Hollow, who describes themselves as music from the bottom of a well. Very fitting for January. Remember cash money

Welcome to 2019

Are you ready for 2019? We say goodbye to 2018 and hello to another year. Not because you will feel any different. After all its just a social construction. But we can just as well enjoy the party, and the fireworks, now that its here. So lets celebrate !!! 😀 😀 😀

Friday
Last show of the year in Ungeren. And not surprisingly its a punk show. Melting Walkmen are Synth Punk and Chainsaw eaters are post punk. What ever the difference is? But Chainsaw Eaters are one of the most disturbing band names. The Images I get in my head. Remember Cash.

Monday – New years evening.
Its the biggest party of the year for many people. And you can party all over town. Just read on, and find a party that suits your taste:

It started as an illegal underground event, with a riot, put then the city
and the police gave in, and now its an official party. Put on warm clothing, and join the New Years party at Dronning Louises Bridge. With DJ´s and bands playing. Starts at 11 pm and is only for 3 hours.

If you are into soul, and don´t mind big blasts from homemade and illegal fireworks, then head to Operaen in Christiania, where they have DJ´s playing all night. The blast are from the steroid filled drug dealers in the street, who are having there yearly firework and bomb competion.

If you are more like the Cuban rhum drinking type, then go for the Cuban salsa party at Kedelhallen Frederiksberg. I bet they have cigars as well.

For those of you who are more into Rock´n Roll, the place to go is The Basement, next to Vega, Enghavevej, Vesterbro. One of my favorite bands, Baby in Vain are playing, with De høje Hæle. Off course the DJ´s come later, but this is in fact a real concert this evening.
Also at High Voltage they have a rock party, with a band playing. Junkyard Drive are performing and are taking you into 2019.

For the Techno fans, you can head for Islands Brygge, and CPH Deeps rave, with a lot of DJ´s . It goes on until 8 AM.
Another more conventional Techno party (and cheaper), is at Culture Box, who have also invited a lot of DJ´s and keeps on going to the late sun rises. I dont know which of the is the best, so you have to check out the Djs .

Tuesday
Everything is quiet. Its one of the busyist days for the fastfood shops. Happy Hangover. 😉

Merry Xmas at The Grey Hall

Glaedelig yul from Bo :-D

Its the last week before Xmas, and everybody are busy, before going on the holiday. But from friday, things in the city are really slowing down (Exept in the shops). Now we are going home to the family, and more eating and drinking.
And then Copenhagen are almost empty and quiet. It feels good when things are moving slower, and the hectic everyday is far away. Christmas evening some places are open, so if you dont want this family thing, there are other options.

Tuesday
Culture Box, is the only place that are open almost every evening during Xmas. They have an extensive program signalling: ”We dont care about Xmas. We just keeps on partying.”

Friday
December 21st is the shortest day of the year. From now on there will be more light: It is celebrated in Operaen, Christiania with DJ´s and concerts. There are diffrent acts in different styles. Its really a mess in fact. Bring cash, for the entry and the bar.

In another location, but the same building in Pusher street, you can find T. S. Høeg AKA Great Dane with his Big Band. I dont know how they are getting room for a big band in this small place. But go there and remember cash. There is no link to this event

Saturday
Also here Operaen and Culture Box are standing out with the only shows of the day.  Its a brazillian Xmasparty with DJ´s in Operaen.Bring Cash 😉
And at Culture Box, they have WetYourSelfi (WYS) from London on a christmas visit. So dance the calories away. And free beer between 11 PM and midningt!! Whats not to like?

Monday December 24th .
The legendary Xmas evening in The Grey Hall –Christiania. Be there when the doors open at 6 PM, because it fills up fast. You will get free food, also for vegetarins and vegans, but else its traditionell danish pork. Later its performances with local bands. Its also fun to volunter, and do the work of cooking the food and decorating the hall. If you are interested in voluntering, its a good idea to be at the Hall friday December 21st around 10 AM, where theres a meeting. You can also turn up later, but then its harder to get into the groups. Everything is done Christiania style, and there are no place on the internet, where you can sign up, or find information.

Stengade, Nørrbro has a party evening with DJ´s opening at midnight at going on until 5 AM The entry is free.

There is Xmas and anti Xmas. And the last one is in Ungeren, who are celebrating the Christmas with having no Xmas, but an open bar, and propably some hardcore punk on the stereo.

And thats it for now. Hope you enjoy yourself. Im going for Aarhus to see the family there. But I will be back on the blog after Xmas.

If Blues came from Denmark it would be called “The Grey”…

In Denmark its more like you are feeling Grey. After the weather and the lack of sunshine. Its when your lover has left you, the cat pissed in your bed, its raining and your bike has a puncture.  So thats whats its like to have a “Grey feeling”.

So here are the best things to do in Copenhagen this grey week in November.

Tuesday
In Loppen they have visitors from the other side of the Globe. Orchestra of Spheres (NZ) are here and are on the stage with aprupte rhythms and a bit experimental. I am thinking of Brian Eno. Supported by Local Red Lama playing Psych Kraut Rock.

Wendesday
I saw them at this years Roskilde Festival (I think ;-)) Pumpehuset are welcoming Skeleton Witch from Ohio, US with there Trash – black – dead metal. Supported by Mantar from somewhere in Germany.

In Amagerbio you can meet Dan Baird and the Homemade Sin Former Georgia Satellites guitar hero, so its south state rock, n´roll. By mistake I posted this in last weeks letter, but shit happens. So here we go again. 😉

Christiania Jazzclub Has the very prominent official adress: 1 Pusher Street.   LSD: Lindborg/Sjöstedt/Daniel are doing some jazz on this boring wendesday. So smoke some dope and forget about thursday.  Cash Only

Thursday
The only thing I can find on this thursday is at Loppen. They are having visitors from Canadian West Coast with Crack Cloud, who are a collective performing Vancouver experimental avantgarde post punk. Support is himmelrum with more minimalistic experimental sounds.

Friday
The Lake is a online radio Station, and they describe themselves as a place for music and sounds. There is a support party at Alicecph in Nørrebro.

Just around a couple of corners in Nørrbro you can find Stengade, with Swedish Agent Side Grinder performing. Its Electronic industrial and the legacy goes back to Kraftwerk. Afterparty with Dj´s .

In Ungeren, Nordvest. Its two Black Metal bands from the US with very gifted musicians: Yellow Eyes and Anicon playing very melodic going into Stoner. Remember ear Plugs!!! Cash Only!!!

In Vega, Vesterbro. Lydmor, just came back with a new album after spending some time in China. Electronic well sounding pop. You can sign up at the Waiting List

Aysha Loren from UK are welcomed at Operaen Christiania. Its Reggae and R´n´B. She singes beautifully with her dancing music. It makes you feel good. Come in good time as it can be sold out fast, and there are only tickets at the door. Cash Only.

We only have a few Ska bands in Copenhagen. At Cafe Bartof, Frederiksberg you can experince the very first: Napoleon Solo are still very ambitious and this is a release concert. So find your suit, your sunglasses and your hat.

Saturday
No wedding without dancing!!!
If you want a trip into modern turkish psych wedding and party music, then head for Alicecph, where you will find Cüneyt Sepetci playing on his horn.

A indoor Distortion party with only Afrobeat, is what you need in November. Live acts and DJ´s is in Pumpehuset, so a lot of dancing and sweaty people.

Theres more West African music in Operaen, Christiania. Mofro Danish / Ghanian Afro Beat and Highlife It will get you warm and dry in the cold and rainy winter.

In Vega, Vesterbro Danish Oh Land is on the poster with poppy tunes, celebrating her debut ten years ago. And she is getting better and better with the time.

The Blues is in the Grey Hall, Christiania when good old Walter Trout with Chicago blues rock. Arranged by Amagerbio, but they are rebuilding the concert hall so its in the Grey Hall.

Underwerket in Valby has 20 below with chewing cum punk rock with a clear guitar Supported by 3 local bands doing skater punk.

Sunday
What to do on a rainy Sunday? Well you can go for some of the locals at Cph listening Room on Halmtorvet, Vesterbro Its a Weekly singer song Writer venue. Everything is run by volunteers, and it should be real hygge. So drop inn by on a sunday. 🙂
Another place for jamming on a Sunday is Operaen Christiania, where there is also a open stage.

Tremonti from Greed is here with his solo project. Its guitar and the voice sounds a bit like local metal band Volbeat. Tremonti has a new Concept album about the Robots taking over. Its in Vega.

What else to do besides listening to music?
Cocktails and Science in Byens Lys Christiania are presenting another Neerdy theme: this time its about new materials. What does the future look like, and what can it offer? What can we do with all this new material stuff – and do we really need it? Its free, but the bar acceptes Cash Only!!! Thursday November 15th,

You can join the party with the local Roller Derby Stars. Its a double header meaning two games on  Saturday afternoon in DGI Byen against Teams from Bryssels, Belgium and Sweden. It will be super exciting to cheer on the girls.

November, November, November November…

The Year has 16 months:
November, December, January, February, March, April, May, June, July, August, September, October, November, November, November, November.
For danes it is one of the most remembered poems, by Danish poet Henrik Nordbrandt. In fact I think january is worse – but its still a good poem. ;-D

Friday November 9th its 80 years since the Crystal night 1938 in Nazi Germany, where the Nazis smashed jewish shops and it was another step towards the Holocaust. And now its more important than ever, that you show yourself as an anti-racist and meet up. Never agin a Crystal Night is at Gammeltorv and starts at 5 PM.

Sunday november 10th  you can renew your music collection at the record faire in Nørrebro Hallen, find the best records. Traders are coming from Germany, Sweden Holland, and the locals off course. Runs from 10 AM – 3 PM

Live Music

Sorte Firkant Musicfestival
This week Stengade in Nørrebro has there own music festival in, with a program of four days – Thursday to Sunday – and a lot of excellent music. Check it out.
The big thing is Lee Ranaldo – former Sonic Youth – playing on sunday. Check the program, it is really impressive, and its a good deal to buy the 425 kr full ticket.

Tuesday
Tuesday there is a pretty good concert at Hotel Cecil in the center of town. Dream Vife from the UK, is a three girl band, and as I can hear it, the inspiration comes from Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and the indie sound of the 00´s. Support is local Velvet Volume .

Wendesday
Jpegmafia Is a new act from NYC, and its a sort of Industrial Rapping, if it exist? Very political, sometimes rough, sometimes poetic. But always interesting, always on the alert. Its at Loppen, Christiania.

In Amagerbio you can meet Dan Baird and the Homemade Sin Former Georgia Satellites guitar hero, so its south state rock, n´roll. First concert is sold out, but lucky you! Theres a new concert the day before. 😀

Thursday
Dirtmusic sounds like its a mix up of everything. If you can imagine a mix of Australian postpunk, desertblues from Western Sahara and Turkish psych, then you are getting near. Its at Alicecph and it will be GOOD.

Tim Andresen is the co-owner of Culture Box, the number one venue for electronic music. And he is also a really cool DJ, so find your dance shoes and get moving, to one of the best Danish Acts right now.

Friday
Hank von Hell is former lead singer of legenday norwegian Turbonegro. He is an excelent performer with a great show, all dressed in white. Its at Pumpehuset, and surprisingly not sold out. Stadionrock with sing a long and too many people taking pictures during concert.

Sometimes I wonder what a big name is doing on a small stage in a small venue. That is the case with Talib Kweli. He is Political, cool, simple, and a much respected veteran in the hip hop business. Its in little Vega

But then in Big Vega you can find Av Av Av. Who are now moving into a bigger scene. Its electronic local DJ´s and they are throwing a big party. Lots of dancing in da club.

Saturday
At Alicecph, Nørrebro they are ending the G((o))ng Tomorrow experimental festival with a three piece concert Astrid Sonne (DK) Ying- Hsueh Chen (Taiwan), and Cucina Povera (Fin) are performing with all sorts of instruments and visuals. Interesting…

Then Pumpehuset has something completly different when swedish rockers Graveyard are visiting. Its sold out, but try your luck with people who want to sell tickets at the original price.

Operaen in Christiania are again welcoming Brazilian La Banda: Its a big band and dance show with samba and alls sorts of related styles.
And they dress up like its a carnival, so you will have swinging skirts all over the place. DJ Quasiliero keeps the dancefloor Hot with Salsa, funk, Samba, Reggae, Hip Hop…

Sunday
The dark sunday is back. And it is taking place at Pumpehuset. Where Kataklysm are performing.  Its Heavy metal with a voice, fast and efficient. And they take no enemys. Supported by Hypocrisy swedish guitar rock: fast and nervy.

Dia de los Muertos and Hollow-een

So now it is time for celebrating the dead, and the ancestors. Halloween and Dias de los Muertos. Personaly I perefere Dias de los Muertos. I Think the Craniums and Sceletons are much cooler than the not so scary pumpkins. Except in ”the Nightmare before Christmas”. Thats cool Pumpkins, but its not Christmas yet.

In fact Christmas starts now, because Friday November 2nd is J-Day when Tuborg are relasing this years Chritsmas beer ”Julebryg”. Its not a very good beer, but there are trucks driving around to the bars, specially in the old city, and you can get it for free. And when you get it for tree, it suddenly tastes better. 😉
But watch out for drunken people with these foolish blue hats on.

Then there is a lot more quality in life, if you go to Cisterne, and sing with the choirer there. Cisterne is one of the best museums in Copenhagen, in the underground water recervoir. Fantastic sound there, in the dark and humid void. Check it out here

Live Music
Friday November 2nd seems to be the big day for live concerts in this week. The rest of the days are pretty lame.

Tuesday
At Loppen, Christiania, there is female and R´n´B Right in your face, with Sa-Roc and Dynasty. Two Very different sounding Afro American Feminist rappers. And not to expensive for these stars of tomorrow. Very much like Lauren Hill and Erika Badu.

Wendesday
This wendesday there are two events worth mentioning, and non of them are Halloween related.
In Alicecph there is faboluous Brazilian Bixiga 70, with references to Nigerias 1970´s Afro Beat scene. I saw them a couple of years ago at Alice, and it was really great. I hope they are OK after the Brazilian fucked up election.

For sitting down and just listening, there is a ”once in a life time” event in Koncerthuset at DR Byen. They are showing “The passion of Joan of Arc” movie from 1928 by Danish director Carl Th. Dreyer, and there is a band performing live to this Epic movie. The scor is composed and performed by members from Portishead and Goldfrapp.

Thursday
Only one gig worth to mention: At Lygtens Kro Dead Lord from Sweden are playing some really good rock´n roll. They play for free, so buy some merch in support.

Friday
Well where to start and where to end. The list is long:
Alicecph are having Turkish new psych in Gaye Su Akoal. Beautifull voice and cool musicians.

Tamikrest are from Mali – West Africa, who are playing this music, named Desert Blues. Really an exeptionally fine concert. I´ve seen them at Roskilde Festival, but this will be even better. Its at Loppen, Christiania

This weeks best heavy is Watain from Sweden in Pumpehuset, performing Black Metal loud and heavy.

One of my favorite US Ska bands: The Slackers giving a concert at the small stage at Amagerbio called Beta.

For the Dia de los Muertos Mexican celebrations, there is Hola Ghost playing at Metronomen in Frederiksberg. Which is not really a concert place.

The Mexican Emabassy are good at trowing up partys. At Nørrebro there are all sorts of stuff related to Dia De los Muertos, with theater, exibitions, readings, food and some music as well. Check the full program at the Facebook page. Its also at Assistentens Kirkegård.

For the Danes MC Einer are legends as the first Hip Hop band rapping in danish. 25 years jubilee celebration at Vega.

Saturday
After this fabolous Friday, Saturday is a bit more quiet.
Two gigs at Christiania: Kira Skov is performing with her band at Loppen. Sort of jazzy Indie, and her very hoarse voice full of sorrow.

There is more of a dance in Operaen with Balkan vs Swing. Horns are playing and the party is on.

Monday
If you are not completly dead after this weekend of the dead, 😉 you can move to Pumpehuset, where Alicecph are the arrangers of The Punch Brothers. Its a five string band, and sort of Irish Blue Grass. Very talented musicians.
